Plato's Cave Paintings

Ask me anything   The tumblr site of Laurence "DigitalSocrates" Kerr. I do webcomics, many of them of questionable taste and sanity. You can find a collection of my work not diluted by random reblogs and Webcomic news at Comic Rehab and Cyphimedia. I also update my Deviantart once in a blue moon.

so Holly just found this on /v/excuse me while I almost puke from laughing so hard

flawless

i agree w/the op (original picture)

as someone in their mid-20s who shouldnt be playing video games anymore, i

i love how even real actual people (not fictional characters!) can be put down for being “stereotypical white males” now, apparently. hey if they wanted to make interesting video games, why did they have to be white dudes??? cuz they were born that way?? haha nice excuse priviledge-head

I had been previously aware of the Double Fine project because Psychonauts is apparently huge and the people I follow get excited when Notch talks about funding it. I didn’t remotely recognize the picture on the right though.
After some sleuthing around to find out what all the butthurt was about I found the Arkh Project, as well as the fundraiser on indiegogo that the number comes from. Now the first thing I note is just how ridiculous it is to compare the fundraising numbers for an established game maker and a team of complete unknowns that are in fact still looking for people to do their work. It’s a splendid naivete that the picture maker thinks ‘good intentions’ automatically equals ‘good.’ The Arkh Project has much in the way of grand sweeping statements like ‘this is the game that no one has made before’ - that is, the kind of thing that every game ever claims - but little in the way of actual content.
They make a point to say that concept, etc, is part of the budget that their fundraiser is working on, but that’s an obvious ignorance of the way an indie game happens. Sorry, but if you are not established you can’t get a budget to /come up/ with a concept. The fundraiser page also fails to list anything about the game itself and only the intentions. I’m all for LGBT and Feminist themes in games, but I don’t want a game built around them. I want a good game built with these themes.
In that regard from what I can see on the Tumblr, looks like a pretty standard fantasy grinding monster-killing RPG. That hardly stands up to any of the exalted claims the image-maker makes of never-before seen characterization, but I then I probably shouldn’t hold the game-makers to statements made by people on 4chan.
